Wed, 02/19/2014 - 18:12

After arguably one of the best years ever in metal, 1987 had an uphill battle to match some of the legendary albums released in 1986.  And although the depth of all-time classics isn't there,  many quality albums were released in '87.  There's a lot of variety on our list, ranging from Anthrax's thrash metal to Helloween's power metal to the more extreme sounds of Celtic Frost, King Diamond and Napalm Death.  Here are our choices for the best metal albums released in 1987.

Fri, 02/14/2014 - 02:11

Heavy metal isn't the most romantic of genres.  There's a lot of brutality, violence, death and destruction in the music.  However, on this Valentine's Day, we feature the softer side of metal, namely hair bands.  And nearly every hair metal band in the '80s and early '90s had at least one power ballad when fans at concerts would fire up their lighters (that was before cell phones, kids).  So break out the acid-washed jeans and the hairspray and enjoy a guilty Valentine's Day pleasure of  some of the best hair metal ballads.

Thu, 02/13/2014 - 18:43

Every Friday I turn the blog over to Dan Marsicano for his Retro Recommendation, giving you a chance to learn about underrated and overlooked gems from metal's past.  Possessed didn't have a long career or release many albums, but their influence is indisputable.  Their 1984 demo Death Metal created the name of a genre, and their full-length debut Seven Churches paved the way for countless death metal bands.  Possessed's second and final album, 1986's Beyond The Gates, didn't receive that acclaim, and that overlooked release is this week's Retro Recommendation.

As The Palaces Burn chronicles those events, including the trial that led to Blythe's exoneration. I spoke with the film's director Don Argott and Lamb Of God bassist John Campbell.

1986 was the best year of the '80s when it came to heavy metal albums. It was the year of Metallica's Master Of Puppets, Megadeth's Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? and Slayer's Reign In Blood.
