Todd Lyons has been involved in the music industry for a while, in several different capacities. Back in the day he wrote for Creem Magazine, and he's also worked in A&R and as a composer and engineer.  His tracks have been used on television shows, commercials and movies. And of course he has written for About.com Heavy Metal for the past few years. Once a month we let Lyons roar, giving him a platform to speak his piece on a music related issue.  This month, he helps navigate the decision on what you might want to spend your hard earned money on, and it may surprise you what he recommends.

Best Heavy Metal Albums Of 1984

Wed, 01/29/2014 - 18:35

1984 was an interesting year in heavy metal. Stalwarts like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were still going strong, but newer bands like Metallica and Dio were ready to try to wrestle away their crowns. More extreme bands like Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate released excellent albums in 1984, as did more commercial MTV friendly bands like Ratt and Twisted Sister.

Thu, 01/23/2014 - 18:18

Every Friday I turn the blog over to Dan Marsicano for his Retro Recommendation, giving you a chance to learn about underrated and overlooked gems from metal's past.   While the American death metal scene was developing in Florida and elsewhere in the East Coast, Autopsy were helping pioneer death metal on the West Coast.  They haven't received as much attention as they should because they disbanded in the mid '90s, but their recent reformation has put them back in the spotlight that they so richly deserve.  Their 1989 full-length debut album Severed Survival is this week's Retro Recommendation.

Best Heavy Metal Albums Of 1983

Wed, 01/22/2014 - 18:06

1983 was a watershed year for thrash metal, as Metallica exploded on the scene with their debut album.  Slayer's first album didn't have the immediate impact of  Kill 'Em All, but the band would have a similar long-lasting impact on the entire style of heavy metal.  NWOBHM bands would lose some of their popularity to thrash, but in 1983 the genre still had a couple of albums in the top 10.  Commercially popular bands like Motley Crue and Def Leppard also made an appearance.  Here are our choices for 1983's best heavy metal albums.
